Our Story

Liverpool has an impressive heritage in its contribution to the global effort to develop better, safer medicines for children. The first dose of penicillin administered globally to a child was at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Alder Hey and the University of Liverpool were the founding members of the UK’s Medicines for Children Research (MCRN) which transformed the landscape for development of age-appropriate medicines for children and young people. Liverpool was designated as a paediatric formulations centre of expertise within the MCRN, complemented in recent years through Liverpool becoming the UK’s training centre for Paediatric Clinical Pharmacology. Liverpool has continued to lead on many aspects of paediatric medicines research, continuing its heritage of global firsts including administering the first ingestible 3D-printed tablet to a child.

The PMRU was established in 2014 and has developed an extensive research portfolio within its themes of: Drug Safety Sciences; Formulations; Medicines Optimisation. Our research programmes span the translational research programme, ranging from the evaluation of novel formulations in the NIHR Alder Hey Clinical Research Facility for Experimental Medicine to applied clinical research and implementation of tools to benefit clinical practice.

Our Team

The PMRU brings together unparalleled expertise in paediatric clinical pharmacy, paediatric clinical pharmacology, the perspective of children, young people and families in partnership with academic and commercial partners focused on paediatric drug development. The PMRU is based in one of the world’s largest specialist children’s hospitals, ensuring that its research programmes are driven by clinical expertise and, most importantly, the needs of children and young people themselves.
